The Egyptian Pound is the legal tender and sole currency in use in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The currency is most commonly traded with the US Dollar and until 1989, the Egyptian Pound was pegged to the US Dollar. The Egyptian currency is subdivided into 100 Piastres, or 1000 Milliemes. The first banknotes in Egypt were produced in 1899.
