When Hong Kong was established as a free-trading outpost in 1841 there was no set currency in circulation. For a time the British Empire tried to establish the Pound (GBP) as the dominant currency but the locals refused to use it; preferring other tenders such as Spanish silver. It was in 1863 that the Hong Kong Dollar came into existence but it was not until 1935 that the dollar was accepted as a standalone currency after being pegged to the Pound.

The Hong Kong dollar is currently pegged to the US Dollar.
