The Hungarian Forint is the legal tender of Hungary and is one of the only currencies to have been used as a means for a political takeover.

In 1946 the Forint was reintroduced after the old currency – known as the Pengo – suffered huge hyperinflation. The country’s communist party exploited the success of the Forint which in turn contributed to the party’s eventual takeover.

After Hungary joined the European Union the long term aim of the country’s government is to replace the Forint with the Euro.
