Following a period of economic uncertainty in the 1980’s the old Shekel was replaced with the new Shekel. Hyperinflation made the old currency relatively worthless and the new Shekel was introduced at being worth 1000 of the old version.

The Israeli Shekel became a freely convertible currency in January 2003 and is now one of only 20 currencies that are able to have future-contracts in the foreign exchange market.
