The Zloty in Polish means ‘golden’ and has been in use since the Middle Ages. The Zloty was used to describe a wide variety of gold coins such as the Hungarian ducat. It wasn’t until 1496 that the Zloty was officially turned into the national currency. Through Poland’s long history the Zloty has come in many different incarnations, with its current form being its fourth.

As Poland is a member of the European Union it is obliged to eventually adopt the Euro.
