Qatar, until 1966, used the Indian Rupee as its currency of choice. The Gulf Rupee – as it was known – was devalued by India in the 1960’s prompting the Qatari government and other gulf states to introduce their own currencies. For a brief time the country used the Saudi Riyal before introducing their own version of the currency. The Qatari Riyal is pegged to the US Dollar.
