The Lira is the currency of the Turkish Republic and has been in use since 1467. The Turkish State Mint was established in Istanbul (which was then Constantinople) after the city was conquered by Mehmed II, however the Ottoman Lira remained in circulation until the end of 1927.

The second Turkish Lira was established in December 2003 after the country suffered from a financial crisis. The Turkish government voted to remove six zeroes from the value of the currency launching the present day incarnation of the Lira in 2005.
